Rules and Regulations
Welcome to the Black Wing Shooting Center, One of the finest shooting facilities in the Midwest. Please read and follow our Range Rules and Regulations. The rules and regulations are designed to ensure that your visit with us, whether you are a newcomer to target shooting or a veteran marksman, is as enjoyable and safe as possible.

General Rules
  • Eye and ear protection must be worn when shooting or observing any of the ranges, both indoor and outdoor.


  • Handgun shooters under 21 years of age and long gun shooters under 18 years of age, must have approval and be accompanied by a parent or guardian at all times while on the range.


  • Be sure your firearm is safe to operate and know how to operate it safely.


  • Always keep your firearm unloaded, finger off the trigger and pointed in a safe direction until ready to shoot.


  • Never hand a loaded firearm to another person.


  • Use only the correct ammunition for your firearm. If you have any questions, please consult a Range Officer.


  • No inexperienced shooters are allowed on any of the ranges without prior instruction, coaching, and approval of the Range Officer.


  • Alcoholic beverages are prohibited on the property.


  • Individuals displaying the effects of, or thought to be under the influence of, drugs or alcohol will be prohibited from using any of the ranges.


  • Children must not be left unattended.  Please keep control of your children.


  • Food and beverages are prohibited in the indoor ranges. Always wash your face and hands after shooting.


  • Please clean up your area after shooting. When outdoors, please place empty shells and trash in trash containers before you leave the area.  When shooting indoors, please place targets and empty boxes in the trash containers. You can leave your brass on the floor.


  • Range officers are authorized to remove any shooter whose behavior is detrimental to the safe operation of any of the ranges.


  • Commands issued by any Range Officer must be followed immediately.


  • If unsafe behavior is noticed, then please make sure that the Range officer is notified of such action immediately.


  • Please read and understand the Range Rules and Regulations before you proceed to any of the ranges.


  • Violation of any of the Range Rules may lead to permanent barring from the Shooting Center.  Please ask any of the Range Officers for clarification if you have questions.


  • Outdoor Range Rules

  • Only shotguns appropriate for skeet and trap shooting are allowed on the outdoor ranges/fields. Rifles, pistols and assault type shotguns are prohibited.  All shotguns must have full-length stock.


  • All shotguns must be kept safe when not on the firing line/station. Keep all actions open, chambers and magazines unloaded, and muzzles pointed at the ground or up in the air.


  • Shell shot sizes larger than 7 1/2 or gauges larger than 12 are prohibited in any ATA event. No shell shot smaller than 9 shall be used in a NSSA event. Slugs are only allowed on the indoor ranges.


  • All shooting games, competitions and rounds shot must take place within the designated limits of the skeet and trap fields or designated areas.


  • A round of skeet or trap consists of 25 targets. Additional targets requested may result in additional charges.


  • Shotguns are to be loaded only at the shooting station. All shotguns must be unloaded when changing stations and before leaving the field at completion of the round.


  • On a trap field, no more than one shell is to be loaded at one time, except when shooting doubles where two shells are loaded. On a skeet field, two shells maybe loaded except at station 8 high house or the last single target at any station.


  • Always check bore for obstruction after a misfire or squib shot, before firing next round.


  • Only shooters participating in a round of shooting are permitted on the fields. Skeet and trap squads shall consist of no more than five shooters.


  • Only range officers are permitted in the trap and skeet houses. When a range officer is in the trap house and when the red warning flag is raised, shooters on the field must not handle firearms, once they have been unloaded.


  • Indoor Range Rules

  • No pregnant women are allowed on the range.


  • Only a maximum of three people allowed per shooting position, with only two allowed in the range at one time.


  • Steel, armor piercing, tracer, military surplus and unjacketed ammo are prohibited. Ammo will be inspected and tested by the Range Officers.

  • Only regulation paper targets are allowed to be used on the range. Non-paper targets must be purchased from the range. The Range Officer reserves the right to prohibit targets that are deemed offensive or unsafe. Use the appropriate size target placed at eye level, to ensure that the bullets enter the bullet trap.

  • Rifle and shotgun shooters must use large silhouette targets.

  • Shooting across lanes or at target carriers and/or other range equipment is prohibited. Violation may result in damage fine assessment and/or shooters removal from the range.

  • Any firearm that is uncased behind the firing line is to be unloaded, have the action or cylinder open, and safety engaged.

  • Only load firearms when on the firing line, keeping muzzle pointed down range at all times.

  • No handgun drawing from the holster allowed without prior Range Officer approval.

  • If you have a malfunction or a jam that you cannot clear, lay the firearm on the bench keeping the muzzle pointed downrange, and ask the Range Office for assistance. Never remove a jammed or malfunctioning firearm from the range without a Range Officers approval.

  • When you finish shooting, unload and case your firearm before leaving the shooting position. Pick up only your own brass that is behind the firing line.

  • Never extend any part of your body forward of the firing line for any reason.
