Bruce Millard

This class focuses on carrying and deploying a short barreled, folding stocked firearm from a backpack or sling bag. Students will practice the consistent deployment of their rifle from different positions as well as work on improving their speed to first shots.

Course work will entail:

  • Quick deployment and shooting from a bag
  • Transitioning from rifle to pistol
  • Movement drills
  • Safe carry methods and ways to quickly access and use the rifle in emergency situations
  • Discussion on the selection of firearms and cases based on environment
  • Discussion on ways to avoid being shot by first responders

About Your Covert Rifle Instructors

Bryan McKean
Bryan McKean will be the lead instructor for the class. Bryan began studying martial arts at the age of 16 and has earned several black belts in a variety of fighting systems.  In addition to the traditional martial arts, Bryan has trained in the Martial Blade Concepts (MBC) program with Michael Janich, and is one of a small number of certified MBC instructors. He regularly serves as Mr. Janich’s assistant instructor teaching knife defense to armed citizens, police departments, and military units.
Currently Bryan is the full time tactical training officer for a Central Ohio police agency. He holds instructor certifications in subject control, critical injury first aid, pistol, rifle, shotgun, sub-machine gun, aerosol weapons, Taser, handgun retention, collapsible baton, and many others.
As part of his assignment with the police division, he procured, developed, and implemented the first police covert rifle program in the state of Ohio.
Greg Ellifritz
  • Greg Ellifritz is Active Response Training's president and primary instructor.
  • Greg recently retired after serving 25 years as a police officer. During his tenure, Greg spent 13 years as the full-time tactical training officer for a central Ohio police department. In that training position, he was responsible for developing and instructing all the in-service training for his 55-officer agency. In addition to the training position, he also served as patrol officer, rangemaster, weapons armorer, bike patrol officer, bike patrol coordinator, sniper, and field training officer during his career.
  • He instructed classes at the Tactical Defense Institute for 17 years and served as a lead instructor for TDI’s ground fighting, knife fighting, active shooter, impact weapons, and extreme close quarters shooting classes.
  • Greg holds instructor, master instructor, or armorer certifications in more than 85 different weapons systems, defensive tactics programs, and law enforcement specialty topics. In addition to these instructor certifications, Greg has successfully completed more than 4,500 hours of documented formal training with the leading firearms, empty hand fighting, and edged weapons instructors in the country.
  • Greg designed the curriculum for the first law enforcement defensive knife class ever presented at the Ohio Peace Officer’s Training Academy. He taught that police knife class to officers from more than 10 different states for numerous years.
  • He has a master’s degree in public policy and management with a focus on criminal justice policy issues and has contributed to several publications and websites including: ‘The Firearms Instructor,” “Ohio Police Chief,” “Combat Handguns,” Survivalblog.com, “Concealed Carry Magazine,” Primedia's "Personal & Home Defense Annual," “Police One,” "Recoil Magazine," and “American Handgunner.”

Pre RequisiteStudents should understand rifle and handgun handling principles including loading, unloading, malfunction clearance, and safe shooting practices.  Students should also be able to safely draw from a holster and fire their handguns one-handed.

Skill Level – Experienced, students should have moderate experience and training with both rifles and handguns. If you are unsure if you are prepared, call for a consultation.

Equipment –

  • Concealable rifle or braced pistol (centerfire rifle, centerfire pistol or rimfire, SBRs okay)
  • Backpack or bag in which the gun fits
  • Handgun
  • Sturdy belt and holster (AIWB, IWB or OWB)
  • Extra rifle and handgun magazines
  • Eye and ear protection
